Notice of Proposals to Alter Geographic Names

Pursuant to section 16 of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008 (“Act”), the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa hereby gives notice of proposals to alter existing geographic names specified in the Schedule below.

Submissions on the proposed altered geographic names may be made on the forms at

or by writing to the Secretary of the New Zealand Geographic Board, c/o Land Information New Zealand, PO Box 5501, Wellington 6145.

In accordance with section 17 of the Act, submissions must state, with reasons, whether the proposal is supported or objected to, and if an objection is made, then submissions may set out an alternative proposal, or support the existing name, if any.

Whakaari / White Island Canyon Undersea Canyon 37°35′S Latitude, 177°14.20′E Longitude. A southwest–northeast aligned undersea canyon 550m to 1100m deep, located at the head of the Whakaari / White Island Trough, just offshore from the continental slope and southeast of Whakaari / White Island. Whakaari / White Island Ridge Undersea Ridge 37°30.18′S Latitude, 177°09.70′E Longitude to 37°16.90′S Latitude, 177°23.54′E Longitude. A southwest–northeast trending undersea ridge that extends for 32km northwards from Whakaari / White Island, perpendicular to the regional slope. Sea Valley
Undersea Valley 37°41′S Latitude, 177°05′E Longitude. An undersea valley with an overall depth of less than 200m, located on the continental slope approximately 20km southwest of Whakaari / White Island. Westland Land District

Mount Eliott Mountain A peak at 2355m on the ridge separating Edison Glacier and Strachan Glacier, on the northwestern side of Landsborough River, approximately 2.2km northeast of Mount Dechen, Southern Alps / Kā Tiritiri o te Moana. Waiau Toa / Clarence River River A river flowing for approximately 200km from its source below Clarence Pass in St James Range, generally southeast, northeast, east, and southeast, to its mouth at the South Pacific Ocean, approximately 33km northeast of Kaikoura. Pūkio Stream Stream A stream flowing south from Mount Turnbull on The Candlesticks (range) to Esk River, through Lochinvar Forest Conservation Area. Waiau Uwha River River A river flowing generally south and east for approximately 160km from its source at Thompson Pass in the Spenser Mountains to its mouth at the South Pacific Ocean, approximately 50km southwest of Kaikoura.
